Preparation For Law School

Applicants must have received or have completed all the requirements for a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university before the first day of law classes. The College does not require any particular pre-law curriculum. However, an educational background including the humanities, history, the social sciences, mathematics, and language skills is important for the study of law. All students are urged to take elective work in English composition or creative writing in their undergraduate studies.

Admissions Policy

Admission decisions are the responsibility of the Admissions Committee. The Committee begins to review applications in December for admission to the next fall's entering class. Applications are reviewed and decisions are made on a continuing basis. Therefore, applications should be completed and submitted as early as possible. Applicants are notified of the decision by mail. The Admissions Committee considers undergraduate grades and transcript; LSAT scores; recommendations; significant employment; post-graduate educational experience; extracurricular activities; special skills and talents; community service and involvement; and a personal statement if the applicant chooses to submit one. In an effort to enhance diversity in the student body, the Admissions Committee also considers such factors as age, economic, educational, ethnic and geographic background.

Non-Discrimination Policy

The University of Toledo has declared a policy of providing equal opportunity in all policies and procedures affecting employment and education. In conjunction with the objectives of the policy and in accordance with the various local, state, and Federal laws, rules and regulations, the University is committed to providing employment and educational opportunities without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, sexual orientation, veteran status, and/or the presence of a disability.

The University of Toledo Office of Accessibility and the College of Law provide various support services and accommodations to students who qualify under The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). For more information contact:

Application Checklist

  • Take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT)
The LSAT generally must be taken within three years of the year the applicant proposes to enter the College of Law.

  • Subscribe to Law School Data Assembly Service (LSDAS) and arrange to have transcripts sent to LSDAS from all colleges and universities attended. The LSAT/LSDAS Information Book may be obtained from:

    Law Services
    Box 2000
    Newtown, PA 18940-0998
    (215) 968-1001
    www.lsac.org

  • Complete the Application for Admission. Request an application form from the Office of Admissions, or complete the application online. Answer fully and accurately all questions on the application.

  • Sign and date the application.

  • Include a non-refundable $40 check or money order made payable to The University of Toledo. Provide the applicant's name and social security number on the check or money order. (The application fee is non-refundable and is not credited toward other fees in the event of admission.) Or, apply free online.

  • Include a personal statement (optional).

  • Have recommendation letters submitted to the College of Law.
The College of Law strongly recommends the submissions of two letters of recommendation. We prefer that these letters be from college professors who can attest to your ability to enter a competitive professional program. If you are not a recent graduate, recommendations may be from persons familiar with your employment record and achievements. Although you are not restricted to two letters, your file will be considered complete when two letters have been received.

Letters of recommendation may be submitted directly to the College of Law, however, we prefer that your letters be submitted through the LSAC letter of recommendation services that serves all member schools. This service is included in your LSDAS registration subscription. To use this service, follow the directions for submitting letters outlined in the LSAT/LSDAS Registration and Information Book, Page I-9. Be sure to fill out and give each letter writer a letter of recommendation form from the LSAT/LSDAS Registration and Information Book.

  • Applicants for financial aid should submit the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the University Financial Aid Office as soon as possible after January 1.

  • Check with the Admissions Office of the College of Law to be sure the application file is complete. Contact us if you have any questions or need assistance.

The College of Law has a rolling admissions process with no final date for applications. However, applicants for the full-time day division whose files are not complete by mid-March and candidates for the part-time evening division whose files are not complete by mid-May may find that most available places are taken.

Application Priority Date: March 15 for full-time students; May 15 for part-time students.
