Approximately nineteen law clerks will be appointed for the 2009-2010 court year for the Connecticut Appellate Court, which functions as an intermediate appellate court. Most of the law clerks will be appointed for the nine active Judges of the Court, including the Chief Judge. The remainder will be hired to work for the retired Judges and Justices who sit by designation on the Court, or to work on motions filed with the Court.
The annual salary of each law clerk will be in the range of $59,076.41 - $59,824.21, depending on the classification of the position, to be paid semi-monthly, and the term of service is for a period of twelve working months starting on Friday, May 29, 2009. During June, the new law clerks will be working with the clerks whose places they will be taking for the next court year. After their service in June, the new clerks will not report again for work until Tuesday, September 1, 2009. Law clerks may take four personal leave days with pay during their term of service and they will have a bank of twelve sick days. Otherwise, there are no paid vacation days. Employment will terminate on July 31, 2010.

The appointment as a law clerk to the Superior Court is for a period of 52 weeks. Positions open in August, September, and October of 2009. Students graduating in 2009, or before, may apply for these positions after September 1, 2008. Since vacancies can occur anytime during a term, qualified individuals available for immediate employment should submit an application following the procedures outlined below.
The salary for 2009-2010 term is the biweekly equivalent of an annual salary of $53,674.86 ($2,056.51 paid biweekly).
Applicants must be graduated with high academic standing from a law school approved by the Connecticut Bar Examining Committee. Applicants should also have a demonstrated interest and proficiency in legal research and writing.
Applications from students whose law schools participate in consortiums and campus interview programs with the Office of Legal Research must be forwarded through the law school career services office and should include:
- A resume.
- A copy of grades achieved in law school, including, if available, class standing.
After the initial interview:
- A brief, unedited writing sample.
- Two letters of recommendation from persons with whom the applicant has studied or worked, or a letter of recommendation from the clerkship committee or both.
- An official undergraduate transcript.
- An official law school transcript.
- A brief writing assignment provided to all candidates offered a second interview.
Students who attend law schools that do not participate in interview programs with this office may apply directly after September 1, 2008, through October 31, 2008. Those applications should include items 1, 3-6, as listed above. Qualified law school graduates available for immediate employment may submit a complete application (items 1, 3-6) at any time.
