This Week’s “Hot Job”:

Attention Class of 2008- Equal Justice Works Fellowship Applications are now available!

Fellowship Sponsor:  Ohio State Legal Services Association (OSLSA) two year Equal Justice Works (EJW) funded Fellowship begins September 2008. Law Students graduating Spring 2008 are encouraged to apply. For more information about Equal Justice Works Fellowships and the application process, visit www.equaljusticeworks.org .

Proposed Project: Large urban hospitals across the nation and Ohio are partnering with attorneys to work together to address the health and legal problems of their shared patients and clients. These partnerships grew out of recognition that patients’ medical problems can be caused or aggravated by the patients’ legal problems; bad housing conditions, wrongful denial of benefits, and abuse.

This project would be one of the first to bring the benefits of such partnerships with rural poor. The Fellow would work with OSLSA’s 9 field offices in Ohio Appalachia to expand a small medical/legal partnership between OSLSA and rural healthcare provider in Vinton County and to start partnerships with other hospitals and healthcare providers in our 30 county service area.

This project would involve working with healthcare providers, administrators, legal aid staff, and community agencies. In addition to identifying and developing potential healthcare partnerships, the Fellow would gather and develop protocols and materials for educating healthcare providers on how to identify patients’ legal problems. The Fellow would be trained in poverty law with OSLSA attorneys, help represent individuals identified with their legal problems. If the project is approved by EJW, the Fellow would begin work September 2008. The Fellow would work out of Lancaster, Newark, New Philadelphia, Steubenville, or Zanesville office. The selected applicant would work with the Deputy Director to develop the project description to submission to EJW by September 18, 2007.

OSLSA: Legal Aid Program with a history of addressing individual and systemic legal problems facing our client population and partnering with the community groups and organizations to better address problems.

Compensation: $38,500 plus DOE, LRAP, benefit coverage, generous leave policies. OSLSA/SEOLS provides excellent on-going training opportunities; New Attorney Training and bi-monthly new attorney trainings to CLE-approved one day and multiple day trainings on poverty law and trial advocacy skills, bin-annual two day program-wide meetings and training.
