Spring Recruitment 2008 Information
ON-CAMPUS INTERVIEWS (List of On-Campus Employers)
On-campus interviews generally take place during the fall semester for second and third-year students and during the spring for all students. Employers who interview on campus tend to be very selective and often provide the Career Services Office with preferences or requirements of students they are willing to consider. Students should not limit their job search to those employers who interview on campus. On campus interviews will likely start the third week of January.
PLEASE REVIEW THE ON-CAMPUS SCHEDULE FREQUENTLY, AS THERE ARE LIKELY TO BE ADDITIONS AND/OR SCHEDULE CHANGES.
On-Campus Interview Participation Procedures:
Employers establish candidate criteria and indicate whether it is preferred (indicating there may be flexibility in the candidates an employer is willing to consider) or required (meaning only persons with those qualifications can apply). These preferences are noted on the interview schedule above.
If you meet the stated criteria, and would like to apply for an on-campus interview, you will need to do the following:
- Have a sample resume and cover letter reviewed by Law Career Services.
- Gather the requested materials for EACH employer you wish to apply to, and submit those materials along with an On-Campus Interview Cover Sheet to the Law Career Services Office by the date noted.
- Participate in a mock interview with Law Career Services prior to any scheduled on campus interview.
Materials may be mailed to us or brought to the office in person. No e-mails or electronic files will be permitted unless specifically requested. Mailing Address: Law Career Services, Mail Stop #507, University of Toledo College of Law, Toledo, OH 43606-3390.
Preparation for On-Campus Interviews:
To prepare for a successful fall recruitment season, please:
- Be aware of NALP guidelines for law students regarding recruitment policies & procedures.
- Review the interview and cancellation policies of UT Law Career Services Office (See LCS Handbook)
- Review the employer’s web site or other printed materials
- Research the profiles of the hiring partners and interviewers (Attorney directory from Martindale)
Interview Selections/Day of Interview Procedures:
After the employer reviews the application materials collected by the Law Career Services Office, they inform our office of the candidates they have selected to interview.
A schedule of individuals selected and each person’s interview time will be posted on the front window of the Office of Professional Development on the main floor of the law school at least twenty-four hours in advance of the interview. E-mail notification will also be sent to all applicants.
We will post the information as soon as the employer gives it to us. It is your responsibility to check for your interview time.
On the day of the Interview, report to the Office of Professional Development at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled interview time to check in.
Always bring an extra resume, a writing sample and a copy of your transcript to any interview, whether on campus or off.
GROUP RESUME COLLECT (List of Group Resume Employers)
Employers that are not able to visit UT Law’s campus request that the Career Services Office collect resumes from eligible students. The application materials collected from students are then forwarded in one package to the employer.
Resume Collect Participation Procedures:
Employers establish candidate criteria and indicate whether it is preferred (indicating there may be flexibility in the candidates an employer is willing to consider) or required (meaning only persons with those qualifications can apply). These preferences are noted on the resume collect schedule above.
If you meet the stated criteria, and would like to submit your application materials for the Resume Collect program, you will need to do the following:
- Have a sample resume and cover letter reviewed by Law Career Services.
- Gather the requested materials for EACH employer you wish to apply to, and submit those materials along with a Resume Collect Cover Sheet to the Law Career Services Office by the date noted.
DIRECT MAIL PROGRAM (List of Direct Mail Employers)
Some employers like to receive resumes from UT Law students, but prefer that the students submit their application materials directly to the employer. These employers are designated Direct Mail (DM) and students should NOT submit the application materials to LCS, but should instead mail the materials to the employer directly.
Direct Mail Participation Pointers:
- Application materials should be mailed in large envelopes so that the materials inside do not need to be folded.
- Direct Mail application materials should be mailed on or around the first week of December, unless otherwise indicated.
SPRING RECRUITMENT APPLICATION MATERIAL POINTERS
Cover Letters:
- Draft an individual cover letter for each employer.
- Cover letters should be addressed to the Hiring Partner at the Law Firm as listed in the NALP Directory (www.nalpdirectory.com)
- Personalization is essential (why this firm, why this city etc.)
- Let the firm know that although you don’t currently have your grades, you would be more than happy to forward them when they are available.
Writing Sample:
- If requested, employers look for a writing sample to be between 5-10 pages.
- It is often helpful if you provide a context for the writing sample. (i.e. This memo was prepared during my summer externship. The issue I was asked to address was….”)
References:
- If you plan on using a person as a reference, make sure to contact them to ask if this is ok before you list their name.
- Employers generally want to see 3-5 references listed. Include at least one law professor and one current or former employer.
NOTICE OF NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY
It is the practice of the University of Toledo College of Law Career Services Office to accept job postings and on-campus interview requests only from employers who agree to adhere to the following policy:
The University of Toledo College of Law is committed to a policy of equal opportunity in education, employment, membership and contracts. No differentiation will be made based on race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, sexual orientation, veterans status or the presence of a disability except as mandated by pertinent legal requirements.
MILITARY RECRUITERS: The policies of the United States Armed Forces concerning recruitment and retention do not comply with the above-stated policy of the College of Law with regard to non-discrimination based on sexual orientation. Under normal circumstances, the military would therefore be barred from conducting interviews and recruiting on our campus. As affirmed last March by the U.S. Supreme Court, however, federal legislation requires law schools to provide job-recruitment access to military recruiters or their universities will risk losing federal funding, including federal financial aid. For this reason, military recruiters will be allowed access to College of Law recruiting facilities. This limited exception is not intended to diminish our commitment to our non-discrimination policy and our policy will be applied to all other employers.
